Is your skin suddenly reacting to everything?

Why it happens – and what really helps now

There’s a moment when a cream that was perfectly unremarkable yesterday stings today. A serum you’ve been using for months suddenly leaves redness behind. And you ask yourself: What’s going on with my skin?

I hear this a lot – and the answer is almost never “you’re using the wrong thing”. Usually it’s this: your skin is overstimulated. Here’s how to recognise it and what you can do about it.

Why is my skin suddenly reacting to everything?

If your skin suddenly reacts to almost every product with burning, tightness or redness, in most cases the skin barrier is weakened. This barrier is your skin’s outermost protective layer – it keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it’s intact, your skin tolerates a lot. When it’s overloaded, even a mild product becomes a trigger. The most common cause isn’t too little skincare but too much: too many active ingredients, too much exfoliation, cleansing that’s too harsh. On top of that come external factors such as cold, dry heated air and sun, as well as internal ones such as stress or hormonal fluctuations. Your skin then isn’t reacting to the individual product – it’s reacting to the fact that its protective function is already at its limit. The way back almost always involves reduction: fewer irritants, more targeted care, time to recover.

How can I tell if my skin is overstimulated?

Overstimulated skin sends fairly clear signals – you just have to read them correctly. Typical signs include burning or stinging straight after applying products that used to be fine. Plus a feeling of tightness that doesn’t go away even after moisturising. Often there’s redness that comes and goes, as well as rough or flaky patches despite using a moisturiser. Some people describe their skin as feeling “thin” or reacting sensitively to changes in temperature. Important: if several of these signals appear at the same time, it’s not a sign that you need to do more – but less. Your skin is telling you it’s overwhelmed.

What makes skin so sensitive? The most common causes

Reactive skin rarely has a single cause. Usually it’s a combination:

  • Too much skincare. Too many active ingredients at once (acids, retinoids, exfoliants) overwhelm the barrier. More steps don’t mean better results.
  • Harsh cleansing. Strongly foaming or alcohol-based cleansers strip the protective lipids from the skin.
  • Climate & environment. Cold, wind, dry indoor air and UV radiation take their toll on the barrier.
  • Hormonal changes. During the menopause or with cyclical fluctuations, the skin often becomes thinner and more reactive.
  • Stress & lack of sleep. Both have been shown to affect how resilient your skin is.

The common denominator: the barrier tips over, and from then on your skin becomes a seismograph for everything.

What helps reactive skin straight away?

The most important step is uncomfortable because it goes against instinct: leave things out instead of adding them. Reduce your routine to the absolute minimum – a mild cleanser and a moisturiser that supports the barrier rather than challenging it further. Pause all active ingredients (acids, retinol, exfoliants) for one to two weeks and watch how your skin responds. Avoid fragrances and irritants that trigger overstimulated skin even more. Instead of ten products, your skin now needs calm and the right skin-identical ingredients that hold moisture and support the protective layer.

It was exactly this thinking that led us to build the Duo: a serum and a cream specifically designed to support the barrier and soothe – two steps instead of ten, without harsh irritants. Not because less sounds “simpler”, but because overstimulated skin needs exactly that.

Fewer products, not more – why this works for sensitive skin

It sounds paradoxical, but the more sensitive your skin, the shorter your routine should be. Every additional product is another potential trigger – more preservatives, more fragrance, more active-ingredient interactions you can’t control. When your skin reacts to everything, a minimalist routine isn’t a sacrifice but the actual treatment. You give the barrier space to stabilise. Only once your skin is calm can you carefully reintroduce individual active ingredients – one at a time.

Thema Overloaded routine Reduced routine
Number of products 7–10 steps 2 targeted steps
Potential triggers Many, hard to control Few, manageable
Active-ingredient interactions Unpredictable Predictable
Fragrances & preservatives Add up Reduced
Effect on the barrier Put under further strain Given time to stabilise
When your skin reacts Cause hard to pin down Trigger easy to narrow down
For sensitive skin Often more irritation Calming possible

Which ingredients soothe sensitive skin?

With overstimulated skin, what counts isn’t an active-ingredient firework display but tolerability. Ingredients the skin recognises and that support the barrier have proven their worth: ceramides and squalane help replenish the protective layer and hold moisture. Panthenol visibly soothes and eases the feeling of tightness. Hyaluronic acid provides moisture without irritating. Complemented by plant extracts such as edelweiss, which gently support the skin. What to avoid with reactive skin: high concentrations of acids, retinoids without a settling-in period, fragrances and alcohol. The goal isn’t to “repair” the skin – but to give it the conditions in which it can calm itself down.

Can sensitive skin calm down again?

Yes. In most cases, reactive skin isn’t a permanent state but a sign of an overloaded barrier. If you reduce irritants and support the protective layer, the skin usually calms down visibly within a few weeks.

How long does it take for irritated skin to recover?

The barrier typically needs two to four weeks to stabilise noticeably – provided you consistently remove the triggering irritants. First improvements, such as less tightness or less burning, often show after just a few days.

Should I avoid active ingredients altogether with reactive skin?

Not permanently – but temporarily, yes. Pause active ingredients until your skin is calm, then reintroduce them one at a time and slowly. That way you’ll find out what your skin tolerates and what triggers it.

When should I see a dermatologist?

If redness, burning or flaking persists or gets worse over several weeks despite reduced, gentle skincare, it should be checked by a doctor. Persistent skin reactions can have causes that cosmetic skincare doesn’t address.
