SKIN AGEING: THE FIRST SIGNS

AND WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN

DOMINIC BERTSCHIN | 30 JANUARY 2026

Skin ageing isn’t a sudden event. It happens slowly, step by step, and often long before we consciously acknowledge it. While many people only talk about “ageing skin” once wrinkles are visible, the process starts much earlier – often in your mid-twenties. This article first looks at the first signs of skin ageing, puts them into context and then tries to find a more realistic way of approaching the subject. It’s a sensitive topic, and one best approached with honesty, facts and a good dose of optimism.

Anyone who thinks skin ageing only affects mature skin underestimates how complex our skin is. Key processes already start to slow down in early adulthood: cell renewal becomes slower, collagen production decreases and the skin gradually loses its ability to maintain moisture and protection. The result isn’t deep wrinkles – but subtle changes that are easily overlooked or misinterpreted.

The first signs of skin ageing

Skin ageing rarely shows up where we expect it. It doesn’t begin with wrinkles but with a loss of quality.

Many people first notice that their skin starts to feel uncomfortably tight more quickly, even though it’s well cared for. Others find that their complexion looks more tired – less even, less “alive”. Fine lines that only show with certain facial expressions are also among the early signs – as is skin that reacts more sensitively than it used to.

Typical signs include:

  • A persistent feeling of tightness
  • A dull or uneven complexion
  • First dehydration lines
  • Declining elasticity
  • Slower regeneration

These changes aren’t a sign of the wrong skincare or of personal failings. They reflect a biological process that affects everyone – regardless of skin type or lifestyle.

At this point I’d like to say that we live better lives when we don’t see ageing as our enemy, but rather as a natural process that simply is. Yes, we can slow this process down, and we should, because slower skin ageing is ultimately the result of healthy choices.

Skin ageing isn’t just a question of age

A common misconception is to equate skin ageing solely with biological age. In fact, external factors play at least as big a role: UV radiation, stress, lack of sleep, pollution, harsh skincare, too many products or a poor diet.

People who want to “optimise” their skin are especially likely to fall into this trap. Too many active ingredients, too much exfoliation, constantly changing routines – all of this can weaken the skin in the long term. The result: the skin looks older, even though biologically it isn’t yet.

High performance or protection?

In skincare, we face a tension similar to the one in training: maximum performance versus sustainable progress. Aggressive treatments and quick results are tempting – but in the long run they can do more harm than good.

Skin isn’t a project you can speed up. It needs time, stability and above all one thing: an intact skin barrier. If the barrier is disrupted, skin structures age faster – regardless of age.

Recognising early skin ageing doesn’t mean fighting it

Recognising the signs of skin ageing doesn’t mean you have to prevent them obsessively. It means taking your skin seriously. If you understand early on what your skin needs, you can support it in a targeted way instead of later having to repair what has been neglected for years.

This is less about anti-ageing in the classic sense and more about slow ageing: protection instead of irritation, consistency instead of overload, quality instead of quantity.

Skin ageing – what now?

The honest answer: skin ageing can’t be stopped. But, as mentioned, it can be slowed down, influenced and made much more harmonious. Not with more and more products, but with a better understanding of your own skin.

If you’re willing to question old skincare habits and give your skin more rest, you’ll often be surprised: your skin looks more balanced, more resilient – and yes, younger too. Not in the sense of smooth or flawless, but healthy.

Our skin needs time & patience, and that’s exactly what we should give it.
