Ceramides aren’t trendy active ingredients. They’ve been known in dermatology for decades – for a simple reason: they make up a large part of the lipid structure of your skin barrier.

This barrier has one job: keeping moisture in and irritants out.

From your mid-30s, this starts to change. As oestrogen levels fall, your skin naturally produces fewer of its own ceramides. The barrier becomes more permeable. What exactly are ceramides?

Ceramides are lipids (fats) that occur naturally in your skin barrier. Together with cholesterol and free fatty acids, they form a structure often compared to a wall: skin cells are the bricks, and ceramides are part of the mortar between them.

If this “mortar” weakens, the wall holds together less well. That’s exactly what happens as ceramide levels fall from your mid-30s – regardless of how many other products are in your routine.
